Book Review

Grave Witch (Alex Craft, #1)Grave Witch by Kalayna Price

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Blurb:

As a grave witch, Alex Craft can speak to the dead - she's even on good terms with Death himself. As a consultant for the police, she's seen a lot of dark magic, but nothing has prepared her for her latest case. When she's raising a 'shade' involved in a high profile murder, it attacks her - and then someone makes an attempt on her life. Someone really doesn't want her to know what the dead have to say, and she'll have to work with mysterious homicide detective Falin Andrews to figure out why.

Me:

I enjoyed this one a lot. The world it's set in is vivid, and colourful. The characters are funny and believable and the romance didn't overwhelm the main storyline. It was an excellent start to a series and I look forward to getting Book 2, Grave Dance when it comes out in July.

Gardening Again...

So the madness begins again. I have finally found a patch down the back of the estate that someone has already plowed, and will be able to share with them. I can't put it in the back of my own garden because of the new pup, Ted, who has a tendency to chew everything not actually nailed down and even that isn't necessarily a deterrent, because he just views the nails as a challenge. So the peas and scallions and a few other bits are in the little greenhouse and stones will be picked tomorrow. Updates to follow.

Blog done.

Surface Detail

Surface DetailSurface Detail by Iain M. Banks

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

One of The best Culture novels I have read, I took my time reading it because there usually is quite quite a gap between each of them. This one is based around the journey of Lededje Y'breq an Intagliated Person, marked with a family debt, a fantastic Tatooto extending to her DNA, as a war from the Unreal levels of Virtual Hell extends into Real. I really enjoyed this Book with the Huge Guns , and quirky spaceships, and great story

writing first day.....

He walked into the room, the doors had automatically opened for him which was practically a miracle in this part of the city, the interior of the building was clean and white, and almost clinically sterile. A huge contrast to the decay and wildness of the exterior, rolling his sleeve back he looked down at the Archive ,a small gray lozenge embedded into his forearm. It was hooked up to his body, his blood providing the energy for it's use. It had been a long journey avoiding the creatures, and some of the more mobile plant life surrounding the city, he'd run out of food days ago. Summoning the mental commands to activate the archive, picturing a field of sunflowers in his head until he felt that warmth in his arm that indicated the archive was booting up. His head started to blur, and the room to spin. It was drawing on the last of his reserves of sugar in his blood, he took the remaining bulb of honey-water from his belt” No going back now” he thought as he drank it,and immediately felt better. Looking down at the map that appeared on the screen he located and walked up to the greeting wall. A slab of glass as tall as himself, cold and green, he could see through it to the back wall of the room. As he stood in front of it consulting the Archive again he touched the glass saying,“ Hello I am here here to meet Mr Green regarding the takeover of Dog and Pony Corporation, I believe I have an appointment. ” This was where the gamble of his long trek would pay off, Since the fall, some of the older buildings were stuck at the moment of Collapse, mindlessly going through routines and protecting valuable stock in their vaults, sometimes with the right key phrases and passwords the could be tricked. This was the life of most archaeologists these days, a very risky profession indeed. The glass screen began to cloud over a face formed in its depths, a very pretty young blond lady, in stark contrast a male voice issued form the glass slab “Code input incorrect, you have one more attempt before annihilation.” Gun ports opened in the walls and gas started issuing from vents lower down in the walls“Shit, i never should have trusted that bastard back in the camp” looking to the archive again, he tried the second command phrase “I believe Mr Sharkey from the Ministry of Funny Walks is expecting me!” The glass wall turned Red and started flashing a 20 second countdown as the guns turned to face him. Taking his last gamble he announced loudly “ Hi I'm from Pizza Express I got a deep dish extra cheese, extra meat special, for Joe Brown on the Second floor” Kneeling on the floor exhausted now from the continued use of the Archive , he waited for his outcome. The glass glitched and turned green again, the gun turrets blending back into the wall and gas was vented from the room, the young lady appeared on screen and still in that deep male voice said “second door on the right, up the stairs, and go to Reception Desk there.” falling on his face in relief, he felt the cool floor under his cheek and, steeled himself to go upstairs.

New Plan....

So my life is very boring and routine, mainly due to the unemployment and total lack of money factor. I really need to try something different, so the plan for the next 4 weeks is as follows:
  1. Write 200 words of a short story every day and post it here
  2. Draw something every day, no matter how mundane, for 20 minutes.(also post it here)
  3. Try to learn some French/German/Italian(Haven't decided yet) for 20 minutes every day.
  4. And read 5 pages of basic structure of the Internet every day.
I realise these are small things but hopefully starting small will develop into a routine that I have some hope of achieving..... and now that its posted here I will have to do it even though no one I know reads , or anyone at all reads the bloody thing.......

Well that's what it feels like, I spent the last couple of days trying to set up a veg patch in the half acre my brother has next to his house. My God , what a pain in the hole that has turned out to be, the first couple of days and it's torture getting nowhere , then my tummy started playing giving me hassle cos I was bending over so much and I had to stop. The next couple of day's are forecast good so I wil try to get it finished, and i have a coupke of friends helping me tomorrow so things might progress faster, hopefully, fingers crossed.... :D

Book Review

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
My synopsis of this series would be "Life's a bitch when your dad's Poseidon" preferably said in that ultra deep Movie Trailer Voiceover. Blurb is as Follows:

Look, I didn't want to be a half-blood. I never asked to be the son of a Greek God. I was just a normal kid, going to school, playing basketball, skateboarding. The usual. Until I accidentally vaporized my maths teacher. That's when things started really going wrong. Now I spend my time fighting with swords, battling monsters with my friends, and generally trying to stay alive. This is the one where Zeus, God of the Sky, thinks I've stolen his lightning bolt - and making Zeus angry is a very bad idea. Can Percy find the lightning bolt before a fully-fledged war of the Gods erupts?

I got hold of this whole sequence of books and devoured them, one after the other. I had stalled in my reading, and just couldn't find anything to suit but these hit the spot just nicely. They are a fun, Quick read, well Plotted, full of action and Greek mythhology, I enjoyed them immensely.

Sfx Weekender

Going from the middle of Ireland to a small town on the southern coast of England for a SciFi Con, my weekend consisted of: Travel, travel, travel, and then 2 days of geekage and then travel, travel, travel, and finally collapse and then sleep.... But in between those two periods of exhausted sleep was some really cool shit. I finally got to meet Peter F. Hamilton, my most favouritest author in the world. As well as Richard Morgan and Justina Robson. Saw James Marsters Live on Stage.... very funny and cool, witnessed the madness that is Tom Baker, Gareth "Ianto Jones" Lloyd, constantly looking for the welsh rugby scores, who was also very funny and relaxed, and well, just had an excellent time. It more than made up for my previous convention experience... of which nothing will be mentioned, the only down side was the accommodation, (Pontins, a holiday camp very much stuck in the seventies) which was manky beyond belief but did for the night we were staying, and hopefully I'll get to repeat the whole thing next year...

Also they had a Tardis , that sadly was not bigger on the inside...*Sigh*... But rumours were going round the camp that someone had been caught shagging in it on Saturday night. I wondered what the smell was.... hmmmm!!!

Oh! And the rental car was awesome , brand new Volkswagen Passat... really quite fast, not that I broke the speed limit because that would be illegal... heh, heh, heh!...Whoosh!.... Oh Yeah!..

ANGER.....

Anger is an interesting emotion for me, It doesn't manifest itself much in my life, or at least I don't think It does, maybe my friends and family would disagree with me. But there are some days like today for instance, when your after driving in the pissing rain with a fecking boy racer jammed to the hole of your car, blinding you with his argon super bright lights, for two miles of bendy, holey roads, and then the little bastard beeps at you as he skips by you on a bend, and all you want to do is chase him down, rip the gearstick out of the car and beat him around the head for half an hour. But you can't, so you go to your friends house because thats where you were supposed to go, and more importantly, you promised him you'd be there at half seven only to find out later that he'd gone to a friends house and turned off his phone. So you go home and Stumble on the internet to cool down before you go to bed and you come across the lovely picture to the left, this so called motivator telling you to go and dance out in a storm... all I wanted to do was track whoever wrote the quote, secretly attach a long piece of copper wire to them and hopefully watch lighteneing shoot up there hole as they danced.... Moron...how do you like them apples.

Anger What anger?

The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

'I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me' So begins the tale of Kvothe - currently known as Kote, the unassuming innkeepter - from his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, through his years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-riddled city, to his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a difficult and dangerous school of magic. In these pages you will come to know Kvothe the notorious magician, the accomplished thief, the masterful musician, the dragon-slayer, the legend-hunter, the lover, the thief and the infamous assassin.'

I really can't adequately express what a joy it is when you find that someone with so much talent as a writer gets to publish a fantasy novel. Kvothe and the world created is masterful and I look forward to the next book in the sequence.

The Zen of Waiting...

So today was waiting at the hospital, waiting for a copy of my birth cert to get a passport, which is sad that I haven't needed one before now, waiting at the garda station to get my identity confirmed, waiting at the post office to send my passport off. Queues, forms, sending off documents, and nothing much happening. I couldn't describe my life more perfectly.
